Humans are adults, or animals is one that has grown to its full potential. Within the human realm, adult refers to social and legal concepts. As opposed to someone not considered an adult or "minor" legally adult has reached majority making them self-sufficient, capable, and responsible. The word "major" may be applied to them. The age for achieving the legal age of adulthood is 18 although definition may vary by the legal rights of the country as well as the stage of psychological development.

Human development is the time in which full physical and mental maturity has been achieved. Adulthood, as it is commonly understood, starts around the age of 20 or 21. Middle age starts at about 40 years old and is followed by the old age of about 60. Adulthood is divided into three phases: young adulthood (18-mid-30s) between mid-30s and the mid-60s and the final stage of adulthood, mid-60s to the time of death. By the time we reach early adulthood (20 to mid-40s), our physical maturation is complete, although our weight and height might increase slightly. As we enter our early adulthood, our physical abilities are at their highest which includes the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed as well as sensory capabilities, heart function.
